@ Nathalie, thanks you’ve just convinced me that Columbia is definitely not a place on my ‘must visit’ list! If you’re one of the nice ones from an honest family I’m not surprised it has the reputation that it does.

@ Pete, very good point! Just because you haven’t been a victim of crime does not mean that it won’t happen sooner or later. As Pete points out, look at the statistics!

Jhb is an extremely dangerous place, not just because of ‘organised’ crime but because everyone seems to carry a gun and the value of a life is so low they all seem prepared to use it, no matter their background, financial situation or education status. … and let’s be honest, it’s not like the SA police have an inkling of control.

After catching three young robbers (must have been in their lower teens)in my lounge and stupidly chasing them up the garden with a cricket bat the police told me to get a gun and make sure that I shot to kill because if they lived I would end up in prison! I lived in a Northern Suburbs area called Fourways, +/-30 km away from Hillbrow and central Jhb so not in the proverbial firing line.

I now live in the SE of London and the person who thinks that this is a dangerous place to be really needs to get out more. Cape Town (widely considered one of the safer places in SA) has 6 murders a day, London has 90 a year!!

I’ve never been to LATAM but must say that it doesn’t really sound like a good place to visit. I’ve met fantastic people from all over South America but must admit they all sound like ex Jhb’ers when it comes to their home towns!

To the mexican dude that lives in joburg. I was born in johannesburg live in Johannesburg and love Johannesburg.
but crime is a huge problem. You obviously live in a cave or somthing if you think mexico is more dangerous.
Go walk around hilbrow at night and tell me mexico is more dangerous. i personaly dont know a single person that hasnt had a good work over….

Johannesburg is the dangerous city in south africa, but the most dangerous places in S.A. are the Townships. Tourist are well respected in S.A. even criminals dont just go for tourists simply because they think they vournable. The real victims of crime are the very same people who are living in the townships.

South Africa was amazing!!! Yes, maybe it was safer being there during the World Cup but we had NO problem. J’berg wasn’t my favorite – but we did venture out to Sandtown on our own, but we were disapointed by malls. We were taken through Hillbro and that was very confronting. Cape Town AMAZING. Good luck South Africa – l hope the world cup helped to remove some of the stigma. You are truly an amzing country and people’s.

Oh please. To suggest that Johannesburg is one of the most dangerous cities in the world is ludicrous. I am a British immigrant who has been living in Joburg for 8 years. In that time I have never been robbed, assaulted, or had anything remotely criminal affect me. However, in the 30 years I lived in London, I was mugged, robbed and threatened many times. Yes parts of Joburg are dangerous, just like parts of Toronto and New York and Manchester are dangerous. Save your opinions of South Africa(and any other country represented on whatever list you might view) until you have actually visited the place.

I am from Saskatoon Canada and it is such a joke that we are on the list. People here don’t lock the doors to their house, leave stuff in the car, and walk around at night. We are a smaller city and there are parts of the city that are more dangerous, but most of the crime here is youth in gangs. We also have a good police force. Saskatoon kinda in the middle of no where Canada the rest of Canada makes jokes about Saskatoon because its farming country, our entire province population stayed at 1 000 000 for like 100 years, and the south of the province is completely flat farm land, and it gets extremely cold. Some good things about it here is that the people are really friendly and community orientated and we didn’t get hit with the Recession.
